Crates of Beauty is a locally made slow commerce furniture and home decor collective based in Joostenbergvlakte. Our weavers work on site, and we proudly manufacture our woven pendants and home decor locally from design to finish.
Our latest collection is a rollout of Ndebele garlic gourds and baskets, bamboo woven pendants on stainless steel frames, wood turned candle holders, and Cape Town inspired pops of color in ceramics, paper mache, and eclectic artisanal home decor from the Cape.
From creating our own unique designs to hand selecting sustainable natural materials from Kwazulu-Natal, to each piece being hand woven by skilled artisans on location at our workshop, Crates of beauty makes local, and every aspect of the process embraces slow commerce with elevated attention to detail. With weavers from the local Joostenbergvlakte area and ceramics from the Cape Overstrand, we place a strong emphasis on local design, sustainable manufacturing, skill share, and empowerment of the local economy and talent.
What furthers the distinction of our pendant lights is that we use authentic bamboo centre cane, markedly different from other pendants that are made from ie Malawian vine cane - while beautiful in it's own right, Crates of Beauty offers a refined look of bespoke, highly desirable, modern, rarely seen innovative pieces of paradise - created at home. We use locally made sustainable packaging by Rebul for shipments, support local shipping company TUNL that allows LCL in FCL containers for small businesses to export to international clientele and every aspect of our product is refined and ready to scale, while every piece has it's own inspirational story behind it.
While we have been operating largely online for the past 3 years and have attended trade shows like Decorex and High Point Market, we are honoured to now have a flagship permanent home at The V & A Waterfront. The Watershed at the V&A has presented an opportunity in alignment with our ethos to empower more local artisans and we have expanded our range beyond our weavers to wood turned products, ceramics, olive wooden home decor, and we are honoured to be in the room.
